According to Mary Jo Foley, it's possible that a computer has been hacked by Microsoft and subsequently used the SHA-2 algorithm. This could be because of the nature of the computer's hardware, software, or software updates. Regardless, the process of generating hash collisions is not an easy one to accomplish. "The hash of a hash is not a complete, random number," she explains. "It is a unique identifier, which is required to identify the computer or computer hardware that was impacted by the attack."
There's no way for anyone to verify whether the attacker had a specific hash. If the attacker has a known hash, they could be able to get a fix for any of the vulnerabilities identified in Microsoft's updates. "We're making sure that we're as rigorous as possible with this," says Mary Jo Foley, a security consultant and former Microsoft software engineer who was not involved in the current security patches.
On July 8th, Microsoft announced that it would be supporting the Windows Update service with the latest release of its Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 operating systems. The software update comes in five editions, with one of them being the Anniversary Update.
Microsoft does not yet have a release date for the Anniversary Update version. The Anniversary Update was a major update for Windows 7, which means that Windows 8 and newer runs only on 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. It also includes updates for Windows XP and Windows Server 2008 R2, the two updates that Microsoft's Office 365 and Azure services will add to their services.
Microsoft announced that it would be offering the Anniversary Update to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 users on September 18th. While the Anniversary Update will be available for Windows RT 8 and Windows 10, it is not available for Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 R2 will run on 64-bit editions of Windows.
Update: Microsoft released a press release saying that the Anniversary Update will be available for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 customers. This is one of the first Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 updates, which is not a direct upgrade to Windows 8.
The Anniversary Update will be available for Windows 10 users on October 10th and Windows Server 2008 users on October 11th.
Microsoft has yet to be able to tell Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 users what the Anniversary Update will be, but it is expected it will be available in October. The Canadian Press
