"It's important that if you're a tech worker and your supervisor tells you that 'you can't do this or that,' you don't say no because it will scare off people on a different level," she said. "I think everyone should have the same level of confidence that their supervisors will be able to take the risks that they take and take it as a public policy issue. But at the same time, if they see there's a threat to security, they need to understand it. And if they don't, it's a problem and need to be addressed."
Honeywell explained that the only way we can change the way we interact with technology in the workplace is by implementing a security culture in our workplace. She's already been organizing against data breach, surveillance, and abuse of the data that is collected on our personal data.
"What we've learned is that we need to be open about what we do and what we don't do," she continued. "We've seen it happen to our employees, and our employees have had similar stories. We need to take it seriously. We need to take this issue seriously, and we need to do it in a safe and civil manner. We need to have a conversation about it. We need to have the tools to do it and that's good to do. And that's good to all of us. That's what's so important to me is, we don't have to sit back and make the best of it and make it okay."
She said she's also been doing that for an organization that is focused on protecting workers' rights. She said it's important that we start building on the success she's having and not just on the threat of a security breach.
"The people who are affected will be the ones that feel threatened – they will be targeted, and they will be harassed by police," she said. "So, if we want to make sure we're doing everything we can to protect workers, we better start building on the success that we've had over the last couple of years."
We also talked about the importance of working with technology companies. She said, "What matters most to people who are using their technology is not how much it is but how much is used to do it."
"There is a sense that there's a little bit of a risk in what you do. I know that people in the US and in Silicon Valley are aware of this stuff, but that doesn't mean we should be concerned about it.
