Open up FaceTime again on a mobile device.
If you're not able to call a friend, you can still use FaceTime.
Once you're out of range for a few seconds, you can press "F11" and then "Voice" (for voice only) to hear the person in question speak. (Note: If your device is locked, you can use a voice command when you're out of range.)

You can then press "F11" to hear the person in question. This should sound like a quick-dialed call, so you'll be able to hear the voice before the person in question asks you to speak.
You can then use the FaceTime call to talk to the person right away and back to them.
Now, if someone in the group you're calling calls you at home, your first action will be to use the phone to contact them. You'll need to enter a password and log in.
If that's your first attempt to hear a friend's voice, you can select "F11" and then "Voice" to hear them speak.

If you're in a group, you'll want to use the Group FaceTime account. (You'll want to choose "Group" after you create your account.)
