The new information from the US DOE was provided to the state by a company called the Commonwealth Nuclear Safety Authority (CPSA), which is the contractor, and it also was obtained from a company called the Nevada Nuclear Safety Authority, which is the agency responsible for transporting and conducting nuclear waste.
A state representative from Las Vegas wrote to the US DOE about the shipment (PDF), stating that the plutonium was already shipped to a nuclear power plant and that they had not learned of the shipment until they arrived. That was the exact date the state was told of the shipment at which time it was supposed to be sent.
"We understand that the Commonwealth Nuclear Safety Authority was notified by the State of Nevada of a shipment which has been sent to a nuclear power plant in Nevada," the representative wrote. "We received the notification within two hours. We have provided the Commonwealth Nuclear Safety Authority with a notice of the shipment, with a request that the shipment be sent to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRCC)"
On Wednesday, Nevada Attorney General Brian Sandoval issued a statement, stating that he had forwarded the DOE's information to the NNSA. That statement came at a time when the agency's investigation into the Silver State was under way.
Sandoval said that the NNSA's investigation into the Silver State was ongoing and that the agency would be holding a hearing on the matter in the coming months. He said that the agency had also contacted Nevada's Attorney General on Tuesday about the issue.
"As we are informed by the Department's decision to issue an injunction to obtain the information necessary to secure the shipment of the plutonium, our concerns remain valid," Sandoval said in a written statement. [UPDATE: According to Sandoval, the NNSA has not provided the information. The agency is currently preparing a press release at 1:25 p.m. EST).
