The Russian Defense Ministry said Monday that the incident occurred at 1:10 p.m. on Monday, a few hours after a missile strike on the Syrian airfield "was launched" by Syrian forces, which came within hours of a Russian-led air strike on the Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun. The strike was the latest in a long series of strikes by the Russian air force against Syrian forces and their allies. The strikes were initiated in response to an attack on a Syrian airfield on August 12, the day before the Syrian government was due to launch the next round of military operations in Syria. Russia's Air Defense Agency, which oversees the deployment of its anti-aircraft systems to Syria, confirmed the strike and said it hit a target which is "more than 15 kilometers (four miles) off the Syrian coast."
The Russian defense ministry said in a statement that a strike on the Syrian airfield "was launched by Syrian forces." The Syrian Defense Ministry's spokesman, Igor Konashenkov, said that the missile strike "targeted a target in the vicinity of the Syrian Air Force, which came within 15 km (seven miles) of a target of the Syrian Air Defense Force" on August 12. The Syrian Defense Ministry's spokesman confirmed that the strike was launched at 12:45 a.m., after a strike by Syrian air strike on the Syrian airfield on August 12. The S-200 systems have been deployed to attack the Syrian airfield for military or intelligence support, Russian spokesman Igor Konashenkov claimed.
Russia's Defense Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was quoted as saying that the strike was directed against a "target that is more than 15 kilometers (four miles) off the Syrian coast," according to Reuters.
"We are concerned by the Syrian air force's actions ... that could have caused the loss of all 15 crew members," she said. "The incident is consistent with the Syrian regime's insistence on protecting the Syrian people in the face of international terrorism and the terrorist attack on the Russian military and the Russian military's air and air defence systems." "Syria's military must ensure its own protection and the safety of its citizens," she added.
Russian officials did not immediately answer when asked if the Russian jets were downed by Israeli aircraft or if they were the target of Israeli missiles fired into the air or missiles fired from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The Israeli military has said that it is under the obligation to respond to any attack on Israeli territory.
