And that's where something new comes into play. The streaming-only model means that when Disney is ready, it will get to stream a lot of the original content of the series. What was supposed to be an industry that was always dominated by the box office and big-name movies—or that was actually going to be dominated by the big, big, big companies—has become increasingly dominated by big-name properties.
So far, it's been the opposite. It's the company's choice whether to keep its legacy as a content provider or to shift to a digital world where consumers can stream the original content and see the original movies from all over the place. To be clear, the company has yet to decide on a pricing plan for its content, as well as an early release date. But even though the current deal is a bit of a joke that hasn't been quite as widely publicized, the new streaming-only model may be one of the most important in the entertainment industry.
So what do you think? Will Netflix be selling off the rights to Star Wars? Are you surprised to see Disney's plan to go digital? Let us know in the comments.
