"If we compare the tumor cells with a human tumor cell, we find that these cells grow much more rapidly on glucose, fructose, and galactose than tumors on carbohydrates, fructose, and galactose. As a result of this, the tumor cells are not as fast as the human tumor cells, even though the tumors grew more slowly in the presence of glucose, fructose, and galactose in the presence of galactose," explains the study's lead author, Professor of Biochemistry Dr. Steven F. Stoll of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The paper is the next step in the work of Dr. Stoll et al., who will present their findings at this year's National Academy of Sciences meeting in September.
