In the current law, Purdue must also reimburse Purdue for any opioid deaths. Additionally, Purdue must provide a "safe place" which it can use to treat pain patients.

This has been happening for months now. For example, in late January of this year, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had identified a cluster of cases of opioid-related deaths among adults and children in the United States—all of whom are opioid-dependent. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was the only agency to report that there was a "significant increase" of opioid-related deaths among those who went to the emergency room due to drug overdoses.

In fact, according to the CDC, the number of opioid-related deaths from the opioid epidemic is up in 2013 compared to 2012. In fact, as in the past year, the CDC has stated that "an estimated 8.3 million opioid-involved deaths are associated with an opioid related death within the United States." The DEA has confirmed that "there were no reported opioid-related deaths associated with the 2014 update of the National Death Index."

This is not to mention the fact that Purdue is not the only company under investigation for its role in the opioid epidemic. In 2010, a group of researchers from the University of Washington told researchers the Purdue company was responsible for the rapid rate of opioid abuse among children in the US, a fact previously never reported by the CDC. This research, along with a recent study of the opioid epidemic in the US, are raising questions as to why Purdue is taking such a risk in its efforts to combat abuse.

These are just a few of the potential problems facing Purdue. And while it may have been able to get away with taking the actions it chose, the company continues to get into trouble with the FDA, and is now facing a lawsuit from Purdue Pharma.

In the meantime, the health care providers and medical device manufacturers may be facing a lot of pressure to do what they can to protect patients who are using their opioids. The only solution, they claim, is for the government to step in and help stop the problem. When we look at those pictures, we often think of men in black suits. We think of them as the next generation of black men, with their very hair and makeup and their ability to carry a gun.
