One more note: while a Google spokesperson clarified to The New Yorker that Levandowski was no longer employed at Waymo, he had left the company after it was sued by Waymo over the incident. (That lawsuit was settled out of court, but the lawsuit has been dropped.)

The article also notes that Levandowski's involvement in the car-crash-involved incident is "part of an ongoing investigation into the Waymo incident," which occurred on August 8, 2014, when his car was involved.

In addition to the accident, Levandowski also was involved in the car rammed by a car-crash and killed one person in a parking lot, according to a statement from Waymo.

"There is now enough evidence that this was an accident and will never be tolerated," Waymo spokesperson Emily Smith told the New York Times . "The company will now seek to determine how it can recover any damages in this case."

The accident occurred when the Toyota Prius stopped in front of a car dealership and "repeatedly pulled the trigger," according to an unnamed source. (The accident happened after the vehicle spun out of control and left the dealership.)

In a statement emailed to me, Waymo said that Levandowski's actions "may have been inadvertent or unintentional, but the accident was not one of those that caused the incident or resulted in the accident."

The company added: "The Toyota Prius driver who was injured in the accident has been identified and is cooperating with investigators."

The Associated Press confirmed to The New Yorker that Levandowski had been placed on leave by Waymo to "restructure his work responsibilities."

Levandowski was not available for comment on the lawsuit the New Yorker reported.
