SpaceX has also been actively testing a new low-cost Falcon 9 booster that would be able to reach orbit on its own, and Hoffman said it has made it an immediate priority to have the system in place for commercial launches. In recent years, the company has built and operated a handful of Falcon 9 rockets and rockets with low-resistance technology, such as the Falcon 9A, Falcon 9B and Falcon 9C.

"We've used low-resistance technology to get to orbit on a Falcon 9. We're looking at some more commercial launches now," Hoffman said, adding that the company is working with NASA to build a low-resistance booster to test that would fit into a Saturn V rocket, or a Falcon Heavy. There are currently not rocket-launch companies testing low-resistance rockets, but many of them are now trying to get those companies to test low-resistance rockets on their own.

SpaceX is a long way from launching its second stage into orbit for its Falcon 9, which is scheduled to take off for the second quarter of 2013. That means that SpaceX has a long way to go before it's ready to fly the next stage of its Falcon 9 rocket.

In addition to the launch, Hoffman said he expects the company to launch its second stage during the second half of 2013. However, a few more flights could be required for that to happen before the new Falcon 9 rocket is ready for flight, and it seems likely that SpaceX will eventually use the Falcon 9 for that purpose.

"The Falcon 9 is going to be operational, and we're going to test it on its own. We're going to launch it into orbit on its own. We're going to have an opportunity to test this as part of a longer program, so that's why we're trying to test it on its own, not on the Falcon 9," Hoffman said.Still loading...
