The 24-year-old man, identified by police as Michael V. Smith, was charged Thursday by Stony Brook police with two counts of menacing and one count of robbery for allegedly making threatening statements to people who followed him.
Police said Smith, of Central Ohio, was in possession of a stolen vehicle and was at a home about 9:40 a.m. when he allegedly confronted a woman he met online.
The woman called police after she saw Smith with the vehicle when she was out shopping, police said.
According to police, Smith, of the 1200 block of W. 17th St., tried to knock on the door of the home when the woman came in. When she didn't answer and tried to talk to Smith, he approached her and started to make threats, police said.
The woman told police that Smith told her he knew she was homeless and would be staying at the home.
When police arrived, Smith told them he was homeless and told them to call 911.
"There's no way to know what this is going to do to you," a deputy sheriff told the woman. "We can't help you, but we can help you, because you can't just take one look at this."
The deputy sheriff said Smith told the women he knew about prostitution and prostitution, but they didn't know if they could get sex from him or from the woman.
When he was arrested, Smith told police he met the woman on Craigslist through a Craigslist page and told her he could help with a trip to the local shelter for women with HIV.
Authorities said Smith and the woman met through Craigslist.
Police said they saw Smith on a dark street with several other men and the man said he would take them to a bar they'd been at for dinner. When he got there, he got into Smith's truck.
Authorities said Smith said he drove the truck through the neighborhood, to the nearest bar.
Police said Smith had multiple tattoos on his arms and legs, police said.
The deputy sheriff said the woman who saw the alleged threats told him they'd been having a "date night."
The woman said Smith threatened to kill her in the truck, and
