"This is a very important area to investigate because of the potential for remote control of speakers, as well as the potential for interference in the transmission of data through a speaker. But, we had to see how the speakers would work without the microphone," says Tromer. In the study, participants were asked to input information about their own screen location and their own computer or smartphone. Participants also were given the opportunity to record the information collected during the session.
The researchers found that a specific form of the Synesthesia technique could be used to create a target that would be able to track a computer that is connected to its own display. "In a case where a target computer is connected to a remote display, we were able to use this technique to target the computer in a way that would be able to track the display," says Tromer. "The idea here is that the computer would be able to monitor the movement of the remote display from a certain angle, and the remote display would be able to monitor that motion from a different angle." Using acoustic leakage from display components, the researchers have found that the audio of a remote display can be a critical input to the system.
The researchers note that this is a relatively new class of acoustic leak research. However, the technique is similar to that used by Synesthesia in how it can be used to identify and pinpoint any type of acoustic leakage from a display. "We're excited to show that if we can find acoustic leakage from a display, we can make such a technology possible," says Tromer.
"What's really important, though, is that these acoustic leaks are not limited to the display," says Michael Stokes from the University of Michigan. "We have found that the information we are collecting from a remote display can be used to create a target that is able to track a computer that is connected to its own display."From Team Fortress Wiki
