This is not the first time that Blizzard has been
This is not the first time that Blizzard has been able to make an MMO free-to-play. It was announced earlier this year that it would offer a free trial on Steam, and it's now on sale for $19.99, while Diablo 2 on Steam is on hold for now.
One final aside about the future of Diablo 2:
The game is being released on PC, but you can expect to see a patch for the PC version soon. Blizzard confirmed that Diablo 2 on PC will be coming out in 2018, though it is unknown if that will mean a new Diablo title or not. It is likely that Diablo 2 will include both new and returning character models and some changes to the gameplay.
The future of Diablo II
In late January, Blizzard teased that Diablo II would be coming out in early 2018. In fact, it was announced that it would be coming out in early 2016. That should be a great move for a team that often pushes its content in order to get players to buy the game.
A new Diablo 2 game is still a big ask for Blizzard. Even if Diablo II can't launch on PC in the US and China, it is certainly going to appeal to some fans who want to get their hands on it.
As noted, if Blizzard does decide to release the first Diablo II, it will be a massive deal for a company that has always been focused on the Warcraft MMO genre. It is also something that will probably appeal to a wider audience as well.
There are also certain potential issues with this move. While the game can be ported to a PC, it won't be compatible with most modern platforms. The release of Diablo II on PC will still require PC players to download the game to play. For more on this, see the Diablo II FAQ page.
When will Blizzard release Diablo II on PC?
This is a tricky one. It depends on the amount of time that Diablo 2 is available for. According to the official Diablo forums, the game will be playable in early 2013. It is expected to be released in early 2014.
It's also possible that Diablo II will not be available for the PC yet for some of the same reasons. Because of the PC patch that was pushed out on the same day that Diablo II was first announced. And that means even those people with older PCs can still enjoy the game on their laptops. So in the meantime, it seems that Blizzard is keeping Diablo 2 off their hands.
