Trump's action has raised questions about whether Zinke's nomination would serve as a turning point for some of the nation's most important environmental issues.
Trump's action was welcomed by many in the environmental community.
"It is a good idea for this administration to put a new Interior Secretary in place, and that will be a strong and good move for the environment," said Dan Barker, director of the Center for Biological Diversity. "The president has said climate change is the single greatest threat to the health, well-being, and well-being of our citizens and, more recently, of all of our states in the United States.
"The president is making some policy that is fundamentally different from previous administrations," said Scott Pruitt, who heads the Environmental Protection Agency. "The president is making some policy that is fundamentally different from previous administrations.
"Zinke's nomination has been a signal to the president that he has a very strong policy agenda on climate change," said Jim O'Neill, executive director of the Sierra Club.
The new Interior position could help the administration make some of its most pressing policies into law, including a proposed rule that would allow Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to make a recommendation to the White House on the next administration's environmental policies.
