While the companies are still working on the folding phones, the new Gorilla Glass prototype in testing is expected to be ready for the market within a couple of months.
"This is certainly a big step forward for the open-source wearable tech world," said Eric Bauers, COO of Corning. "You can expect the technology to become more and more ubiquitous and be used as a platform for wearable technology as well. The fact that there are so many different types of materials used for the flexible displays in the world is a testament to our growing market share and the fact that we have built a world where we have a wide variety of applications today. We are also very excited to see the future of how Gorilla Glass will evolve, and to see the next big leap in computing and software."
According to a presentation in the Wall Street Journal by CFO John Peeples, Corning also plans to release a prototype of the concept in the next few weeks. The company recently unveiled a prototype of a "tipped-off" version of the prototype display in 2013. That idea was later scrapped due to poor user experience and lack of "quality control."
As for the next big step, Peeples said:
"I think the next big step is more of a design challenge in terms of making the display thinner and thinner. We are looking at ways of doing things that work well and can be used in different ways in different areas of the world. With the thinness and the thickness, we're looking at ways to improve the ability of the device to work with other devices and to work better with the user of the device. We also want to provide people with better experience, and that means changing the way we do things."
There are also a lot of other things that could improve the performance of the Wearables platform that are at risk of falling into the grip of consumers and developers. There are also other elements that could make the wearable tech more flexible and less fragile.
According to Wired, some of these things might include:
- Increased capacity for sensors, and a thinner display
- Increased battery life, in the form of higher-capacity batteries, and a larger battery pack to accommodate larger devices
- Increased battery life when you're using the smartwatch
- Increased battery life by removing old data
- Increased battery life when you're using the app on the watch
