With a new digital archive, the National Archives and Records

With a new digital archive, the National Archives and Records Administration is sharing their archives for the first time with the public, so it's possible to see what happened to those recordings when they were being processed.

"The history of our space program is a little bit murky, but a lot of what we're doing now is in the public domain," says Mark Kelly, a senior scientist with the National Archives' Digital Collections at the agency.

The Apollo 11 team was originally told, "This is a record of the first landing of Apollo 11," and they were given the technical keys that allow the astronauts to land on the Moon. (Later, the mission's crew members said the landing was a mistake, but the crew was eventually given a key to make it work.)

"The record of Apollo 11 is a little bit murky, but a lot of what we're doing now is in the public domain," he said.
